Dave Twyman- Fulham Power Station Print E-mail

I lived in Mortlake and went to Fulham as a apprentice electical fitter from 1956 till1962.The electrical department covered the whole Power Station. There was also a mechanical and instrument department. There were two boiler houses which contained 16 Stirling boilers. The Turbine Hall had five Metropolitan Vickers MW Alternators and one 60 MW English Electric one. There were also three jetty cranes which were on a jetty in the river and moved 175 tons of coal every hour. The Power Station had 10 Colliers (boats) but not all at once.

The top man was Mr Tapp and his deputy was Mr Woods. My department head was Mr Greenhough and my foreman was Frank Martin. Frank's brother Jackie also worked in the department. Other charge hands who come to mind were George Cummings, brothers Danny and Eric Martin, Les Day, Arthur Hussey, Freddy French and Bill Barrett.

When there was a seaman strike our colliers stopped coming so small barges like narrow boats bought our coal. Their holds were very small. Our grabs lifted about 20 tons at a time so were a very tight fit in the holds. One day a crane driver knocked the stove pipe off the boat roof . Up out of the cabin came an irate soot covered boat owner, but when he sailed he was the proud owner of a shiny stainless steel stove pipe.

The Royal Mint and the USA navy also brought old paper money to be burnt. These notes had These notes had five holes punched in them but some ended up in a dead part of the fire, so not all got burnt.

The station was also notified of people jumping off the bridges as they might end up in our screens.
