The Drayton Paper Works opened in Sullivan Road near what is now South Park in 1910, occupying a three acre site on former market garden land and was one of our main employers until the mid 1980s. Founded in 1856 and trading as G.W.Dray and Sons. the Company soon built a reputation for manufacturing the first "curled" or rolled toilet paper in the UK, paper carrier bags and high quality envelopes. The Company was split into two in the early 1900s and the Centenary Book published in 1956 covers the firm's decision to move into what was described as "a rural outpost." "Maybe in 1910 when horses still outnumbered automobiles on the streets Fulham was a little off the map but the gathering momentum of the motor industry and the gradual dispersal of the population from central areas soon altered all that."
