South Library was the name of the original building which stood in Wandsworth Bridge Road. It opened on the 20th January 1896 with a reading room and reference facilities. The library was built on land purchased in 1893 from local benefactor Miss Charlotte Sullivan, who also supported the construction of St Matthews Church. The building itself cost £2,600 and was finally completed in 1901. It was demolished in 1964 to be replaced by a building which housed the new Sands End Library, public baths and laundry. Valerie Copper, who lived in Querrin Street, says it used to cost her 6d in old money (about 5p) for a bath. Sands End Library relocated to the new community centre in Broughton Road during the 1980s- in the former Sunlight Laundry building.
