I remember when the Shell Petrol Company drivers went on strike and the army were called in to deliver the petrol by way of the shell bowser. of course the drivers didn't like that and began throwing fireworks under the vehicles as they went by which gave cause for concern as the Depot and its vehicles were only 20ft from our front door. Happy Days!

Our house was the last house in Townmead Road at the junction of Elbe Street and across the road from Chelsea Central School.

I had earlier lived at my Uncle Harry's flat at No 136 Townmead Road for some time during the war. He had three kids Brian, Gwen and Joan. The house itself was next to the church hall which often held kids parties. It was here that I was introduced to such exotics foods as salmon and tomato paste and mustard & cress sandwiches, together with those those most diabolical of all creations Tapioca pudding and Marmite. YUK!

The area has changed greatly over the years. At the foot of Wandsworth Bridge adjacent to the Tavern pub, now a business park, was an oil distillery and in Townmead Road where part of the car auctions are held was a small cafe.

Colin sadly passed away in December 2007 after a short illness. His family wanted his contributions to be included on this website because he so much enjoyed discussing his memories of Sands End.
