My parents were Marjorie and George Giles and my dad worked for Shell Mex for over 40 years. My mum worked for Jane Shilton handbags in Peterborough Road for some time. My paternal grandparents lived in Townmead Road for most of their life, They were Albert and Rhoda Giles. Most of my paternal aunts and uncles lived in that area, they didn't travel very far in those days! My Uncle ran the local greengrocery store in Townmead Road for many years until about 1964 or 1965. He was very well known in the area. His name was Sid Sayers. I left the area when I was 11. I went to Langford and then Peterborough School. I used to work in the newsagents at Sullivan Court after school, which was run by Mr & Mrs Dines and I went to school with their son Ronnie Dines. I have two boys, Rob who was born in 1977 and Martin in 1980 and now live on the Surrey/Hampshire borders. Since my father-in-law died in May we don't now have much reason to go up to London.
