I went to Chelsea Central School as did my brother Michael and sister Majorie. I was the only one to gain GCEs and got a good job in a bank in the city. My eldest brother George, who went to Ackmar Boys School with my other brothers John and Bill gained a scholarship but wasn't able to take it up and was sent to Drayton Paperworks to work. It was very difficult at that time to continue your education, especially if you were part of a large family. University wasn't an option no matter how bright you were. My sister Majorie is 10 years older and didn't have the same opportunities. She was taken out a school at 15 and worked in the Sunlight Laundry. She didn't stay very long and started nursing at 17. She retired a few years ago after about 50 years in the nursing profession.

My brother George is pictured on the right and a guy called Jack Lovell in the centre who lived in Althea Street.  I don't know who the other chap is. Other picture is of Alan Stubbs with Mrs Bridges and her dog.

I was born in Northamptonshire in 1944 as my dad was serving on submarines (taken prisoner of war in Italy) and my mum and the rest of the family were evacuated to Wellingborough. Mum's two sisters had both lost their husbands by that time and they married Northamptonshire men and their families (my cousins) are still up there. We came back to Fulham when dad was freed and lived in 67 Stephendale with my maternal grandmother.

All nine of us lived in the top flat (five rooms)! My brother Michael was born in the Parsons Green Maternity Hospital in 1951. The bottom flat in our house was occupied by a lady we called "Aunt Lou" who was no relation. She paid 12s 6d rent a week for the flat.

Among our neighbours was a Mrs Bridges who lived next door at No. 69. She was tragically killed crossing Wandsworth Bridge Road with her husband who survived. Linda White lived at No. 63 and in the flat under hers was the Butler family, George, Mary and their son Johnny. Next door in the top flat lived Ivy Dean and her husband Frank and the Upham family occupied the bottom flat. I was friends with Carole Upham but have now lost touch. I also remember the Stubbs family- all boys. Alan Stubbs died very young - just 21.

The only person I know in Stephendale now is Mr Wipp. His wife Hilda died some years ago and tragically his daughter Linda died after she had returned to Fulham and modernised the bottom flat. She was a lovely person. Pat Wipp the other daughter is about two years younger than me and I am still in contact with her. She is a hairdresser who works from her dad's house. Another person is Rosalind Cole. She is a cousin of Linda White and moved back to the same house in Stephendale she lived in when she as a child.

My future husband Maurice Nunn lived at the other end of Stephendale Road near the Catholic Church. I used to pass his flat on my way to school. We got talking to each other and married in Holy Cross Church, Ashington Road five years later in 1967.

We moved to Mitcham but bought the house in Stephendale from my parents in 1971 as it was in a very bad state of repair and they didn't have the money to spend on the property. It didn't have any bath rooms or proper kitchen just a stone sink and an old copper to boil the water. It took ages to get planning permission and for an architect to draw up plans and my mother died before it was remodernised which I am still upset about now. We kept it in two flats and my dad lived downstairs with his own bathroom and kitchen. He unfortunately had only 4 years longer but at least he had a bit of comfort and spare cash for a while. Three of my four brothers lived with us at that time then Michael married Frances and moved out.

In 1987 we had it turned into one big family house, five bedrooms, two bathrooms and two living rooms. When my children started leaving home it was too big for us so we moved out in 2003 and sold it in 2006. It was a wrench after being there the best part of my life but by that time most of the old neighbours had gone and it wasn't the same.

All my dad's family lived within a few yards of each other with the exception of one sister who lived in Essex. His brother Jum lived at 24 Althea with his wife Lil and their daughter Betty, who died aged 65 in 2006. Her dad was nearly 96 and only lasted a month after her. His sister Connie lived at No. 85 (bottom flat) and moved about 15 years ago to Parsons Green. She died in 1998 but her son George still lives in Parsons Green. The youngest brother Jim lived at No. 73 until he moved to the Home Counties.

I remember the Whittons shop just opposite our house (how near can you get a shop). Elaine Whitton was the daughter and Bill Whitton was the dad. I think the mum's name was Olive but cannot be sure.

Another of my memories is walking over Wandsworth Bridge and smelling the gin factory. I think everyone who lived in Fulham remembered that.

I live in Stoneleigh now and so many people who live round here or Worcester Park come from Fulham. I am still in contact with five friends I made when I was 11 and we are in regular correspondence and meet up now and again. We had a reunion of the whole school a few years ago and it was very well attended. Some of the people who went were in their 80s!

A photo of a coach outing of women in the local area going to the coast, taken in the mid 50s. My grandmother is the old lady in black (front left). Next to her is the lady who lived below us who we called Aunt Lou. Also in the photo are Mrs Markham and Mrs Mockeridge of Althea Street and Mrs Beeches who lived at No. 85 Stephendale Road.
