The face of Fulham changed drastically during the 1970s as the working classes moved out and the middle classes moved in. One small illustration of this was when my mother was sweeping the front garden one day. Although small this was a common chore amongst working class people and the new neighbours who had just moved in asked if she would clean for them as well!

An ex Mayor of Fulham lived in Settrington Road with his parents and sister and they sold their property to the council under alleged "strange circumstances." The property still remains with the council today and I believe it is one of very few council houses in the road. At the time there was talk of an inner road circling London [a bit like an inner M25] which would run very close to the houses thus devaluing the properties. It never materialised though.

I remember the saplings being planted in the street which are today well established trees and which, as the residents originally feared, shut alot of the light out of their houses. We played happily in the streets in those days and no one troubled us and we them. Life was free and easy as we were allowed to develop in a very natural way without the fear that prevails in today's society, We all knew our neighbours and it's true to say looked after each other. Everyone said "good morning". If you do that early in the morning today everyone looks worried!
