We lived in Pearscroft Court which was a four storey block, next to The Queen Elizabeth pub. Our parents used the Queen Elizabeth and also The Rose in Harwood Terrace. We had a really strict porter in Pearscroft who would not lets us kids play on the grass (try telling the kids that these days). Two views of Pearscroft Court which has now been demolished. Families who occupied William Parnell House were moved to Pearscroft when their flats were knocked down during the 1980s. Photos Hammersmith & Fulham Archives. Our milkman (Coop) had a horse and cart. On Wandsworth Bridge itself was a big brewery and when the wind was in the right direction the terrible smell of yeast was overpowering. We attended Langford Rd primary school and I then went to Hurlingham which was an all girls at the time. We had to wear really funny hats, like a boys cap but with no peak. At Hurlingham there were houses thet you were in, Curie, Fry Bronte or Nightingale. I was in Nightingale and had to wear a yellow and black striped tie, Bronte was blue/black, Fry/red /black and Curie green/black. Looking back they were such happy days at that school. North End Road was a brilliant market back then. We went to the swimming baths there every Saturday morning, where we had to wear different coloured rubber bands and after about an hour the call would come 'all red bands out' etc. We would then go into the snack bar in the swimming baths and have a big bowl of tomato soup and a roll, it was always tom soup and it was delicious. Madelaine is married to Mike Lyons. Read his memories in the Wandsworth Bridge Road (south) section.
