We had some interesting neighbours. At number 46 upstairs there were two ladies. One had a legal background and I believe the other was in the civil service. Anyhow they were the people that were called on for advice. Mrs Sutton opposite had a nursing background. She did such things as 'laying out' when someone died. She was the one with a phone so occasionally took important messages but the usual method was by telegram.

At 48 was a Mr Jones and his sweet Burmese wife. They had a small TV and if we were quiet on a Sunday we were invited to tea and Muffin the Mule. I was too old but TV was a novelty and the tea was good. Other neighbours included the Odall, Wilcox, Wiggins, Folley, Ross, Wells and Tant families. Above us at 50 was the Ashley family and their son Tom lived further near the bend in Oakbury.

My parents were Ray and Florrie Simmonds. My father was a brother of my mother's friend, so that is how they met in the 30's. Like my mother and my aunts I married at St. Mathews and went to Peterborough School. I have heard that Peterborough school is being closed.

My Gt.grandfather Charles Harradine lived in Lindrop St off Townmead Road, He was a cab proprietor and kept his horses in the fields nearby. His wife and family lived in Chelsea but they were separated. He remarried shortly after my Gt.grandmother died in 1904. The marriage was not approved as she married on her 21st birthday. This could be why my grandparent the Bakers moved on to the Hever Estate. My grandfather remembered the Estate being built as the area was green fields. Most of the flats seemed to change hands within families or by being in the know. The Hever Estate Office was in Wandsworth Bridge Road on the corner with Oakbury. My grandparents lived upstairs at 90 Hazelbury Road  Later my grandmother 'swopped' in the late 40's with my aunt who lived downstairs at 7 Oakbury. I lived in Oakbury Rd from about 1938 to 57 when I married,

My husband was born in Cloncurry Road but the family soon moved to Richmond. We met at a cricket match when I stayed with friends at Kingston Vale. He supports Fulham Football club. We moved to Chertsey, Surrey, partly for work but there was no option as far as housing was concerned. We have a daughter and family in Wisbech.
