My dad Fred Clifford was born at 14b Marinefield Road and he always said " I came into the world head first in this house and my one wish is that I'm not carried out feet first" A wish that came true as he retired to Suffolk and died there a happy and contented man. He worked for a firm doing patents. My Mother Helen (known as Nell) first lived in Buller Road and this was changed to Bulow Road when the War was on as Buller was evidently a German name and is now where Bulow Court is. My mother is still alive (81 years old in 2007) Among our neighbours were Mr and Mrs Shuttleworth at 14A , Mr and Mrs James at 14C and Mr and Mrs Gardener at 14D. Friday night was bath night at Marinefield Road and dad used to bring in the old tin bath that hung outside on the wall boil saucepans of water on the cooker and fill up the bath. I was lucky because I was the youngest and got the first bath, Then my brother then mum and last dad. Although they kept emptying part of the water and topping it up with hot It could not have been the best by time my dad got in and the he had to empty it all and carry the bath back out by which time he was sweating which seemed a waste of time having a bath in the first place. Thank God they built Sands End baths. It was hot running water heaven! We also had outside toilets in Marinefield Road. I lived in Marinefield Road until 1979 when I got married and moved to Kent.
