I married in 1963 in Spanish Place, London and we moved into 16 Kilkie Street from my home in West London. We lived in the upstairs flat for five years. We knew the people who had lived there before. Their name was Penfold and they had been there for many many yearsl. I worked with Mrs Penfold and the flat was transferred to us via a landlord. We had to pay £100 to Mrs Penfold for fixtures and fittings which was a huge amount in those days. Our rent was £2.25 per week. For this we had a completely self contained two bedroomed flat with a large front room, a smaller living room, a kitchen and our own bathroom and toilet. The downstairs flat was occupied by a Mrs Sutcliffe who had lived there all her life. We were able to get to the outside small garden via a trap door which was built over the staircase in our kitchen. Mrs Sutcliffe had a son Ken who also lived in the street but later moved to Bury St Edmunds. They had a relative who lived at No 6, he was very kind to us during our time there. The four chimneys from the power station were the landmark for people visiting us.We shopped at the local store, and we went to a local launderette. The local pub was called The Glen.We looked forward to going once a week to the pie and mash shop, There was one near the station and then one opened in Wandsworth Bridge Road. My husband and I worked in Baker Street, London W1 and we travelled there every day by bus and train. We moved to Downley, High Wycombe in 1968 when we bought our own house. We continued to travel to London everyday. We have lived here ever since. Our two children were born here and still live locally with their families. We were very happy in Kilkie Street and were very lucky to have our own flat, especially as it was self contained. Below picture is of Kilkie Street houses under construction at turn of 1900s.
