Christine Horrigan- 3 (1972-74 Print E-mail

My then husband Brian Horrigan and I moved into the ground floor and basement flat of 3 Hazlebury Road in April 1972, following our marriage. Our landlady was Winifred Walton who is now sadly no longer with us. She used to work in the Natural History Museum Cafe and lived in Hazlebury Road for 30 odd years.

On the corner of Hazlebury was a red telephone box which was almost in front of our front room and not having a phone we could get friends to ring us at a pre-arranged time and get out the front door to answer calls. It was like having our own personal phone box. There was a Post Office/General Store run by a lovely Asian family right on the corner (behind the phone box) that was always open and sold almost everyything!

I remember the baths in Wandsworth Bridge Road. My husband used them several times because we had no hot water for a while. I can remember him telling me how customers would sit in the cubicles shouting out "More hot here"  "More cold here" and so on.

The boys used to do footie practice on Sunday mornings on Eelbrook Common and go for a lunchtime drink over the road in a big pub opposite which I think was the Duke of Cumberland.
