I can remember the laundrette on the corner of Byam Street and Stephendale Rd. I was banished there (I would have been nine) with my mum on the afternoon of the 1966 World Cup final so that my dad could watch on the TV in peace. We came home too early not knowing extra time was being played!!!! I was born in the house in Glenrosa street and lived there until I got married. From the age of 5/6 I used to walk to Langford school on my own gathering friends as I went. How times have changed! I well remember the sweet shop at the corner of Furness Rd and Broughton Rd (Dewberry's) which was a must on the way home from school. I was at Langford from 1961. The following year my mum joined as a dinner lady and sometime later became the infants school secretary where she remained until she retired in 1984 Our summer holidays were spent playing in the street in Glenrosa Street. There always seemed quite a crowd of mixed ages. We only went into eat and go to bed. We used to play rounders using four parked cars as our bases until the car owners appeared!! I also remember Charlie's newsagents in the row of shops by the Catholic Church in Stephendale Road. I went there every evening to buy my dad's Evening News and sometimes got two ounces of sweets from a jar.
