Each house in Elbe Street consisted of two self contained flats with a common entrance hall. In the early 50's they offered the houses for sale and I think my father brought his for about £600. This included both upstairs flat and down. He sold it in 1954 for £1,250 and moved to Greenford. I think these places as two self contained flats are worth well over a Million pounds if not more these days. I wish he had kept it and not moved. When fireworks became available after the War we used to have a bonfire in the middle of the road on firework night. We used to collect wood for a long time and hide it letting off the fireworks and often the fibre brigade used to come round and put them out. We always kept some dry wood hidden and lit the fire again when they had gone. For the street party on VE Day they ripped all the wood off the fences of Townmead Road School and had a huge bonfire. I attended Peterborough Primary and Sloane Grammar, served in the RAF and had a career as a photographer.
