Joan Brantigan- 60a (1942-53) Print E-mail

My parents were Len and Nell Brantigan. My brother and sisters were Len the eldest, then Pauline, followed by myself and the youngest Lynn. My Dad was quite a character. He was a shoemaker & shoe repairer. I remember he taught shoe repairing  at evening classes, I think these were held at Langford Rd School. He was also involved with local youth and managed a successful football side called Stamford United of which I went to their matches on a Sunday.

Stamford United: In the top picture my brother Len is in the top left corner. In the bottom picture my dad Neil is on the left in the suit.

Tom and Edie Allen of 58 Broughton Road were my God parents. As I remember Tom was a railwayman, maybe a driver. He was always very smart when going off to work and Edie was a great help to my mother during the war years. William Dann, Edie's father, always reminded me of the old Phillips man repairing shoes with his last between his knees.

I went to Langford School between 1947 and 1953 and Barclay School from 1953 to 1957. I am married to Martin Powell and moved to Cambridgeshire when he retired four years ago. We lived in Stevenage for many years.

I am in touch with Brenda Hills who lived across the road from us. She now lives in Canada but still comes back to England every few years to see her family.

See Joan's Langford School  class photos in Schools & Churches section.
