I went to Peterborough School from 1940 to 1946. Our Headmistress Miss Tremere had a club foot. Our teacher Miss Morris didn't have a cane but they were generally in use at the time. She used to roll your sleeve up and give you about ten slaps on the inside of your arm. (of course it never happened to me). Other teachers were Miss Mendoza and Miss Segle. The caretaker was Mr Trickett. We had mental arithmetic every day. Also school assembly which the Catholics opted out of. Glass straws were used to drink school milk. The school was Victoria building and three storeys high- top floor boys, middle floor girls and bottom floor infants. Classes were separate and before 1942 all the lighting was by gas. The playgrounds were divided up and the toilets were on the other side so no matter what the weather you had to go out in it. There was no school uniform because it was war time and all clothes could only be bought with clothing coupons. Once you had used them up there were no more.
