Like many London schools Langford was built during the late 1880s. The new Education Act of the time made schooling compulsory for children between the ages of seven and fourteen. The three storey Victorian building with its pointed steeple is one of Sands End's historic and most recognised buildings. Mr L.J. Garrard was Headmaster of Langford School from the 1940s until his retirement in 1965. He had been in teaching for 40 years and was held in high esteem by pupils and staff alike. Contributors to the popular "Friends Reunited" website remember him for his love of the writings of Charles Dickens, of folk music. national songs and dancing. Now read the recollections of former pupils.
