Langford Road school in the late 1940s and Ms Fox became my greatest and constant misery. Her thin figure in it’s navy blue dress, and dark hair, scraped back into a bun at the nape of her neck, made my heart beat faster and my stomach churn. One morning as I was sitting in class listening to Ms Fox tell us what new torture she had in store for us that day I quite suddenly felt a little dizzy (and not for the first time) but on this occasion there were consequences - I fell to the floor - unconscious! The next thing I knew was my mother with me and I was in hospital! After a blood test, X-rays etc I was sent home with a inconclusive diagnosis. Perhaps I was lacking oxygen or maybe I was just a very anxious child. It could have been a ‘bug’ of some kind’. We were also still on food rations at that time. Bridget ended up at the Queensmill School for special children. Read her story (Bridget McDonough-Sick Child') in the Townmead Road section of 'Where We Lived'.
