The Star cinema previously stood in Wandsworth Bridge Road between Broughton Approach and Hazlebury Road. It opened in 1913 with seats for 606 patrons and closed in February 1956. The building then stood derelict until it was finally demolished in 1961. At the time of its construction other picture houses in Fulham were the Broadway Gardens close to Walham Green Station (Fulham Broadway), The Fulham Picture House at 260 North End Road (later Regal), the Red Hall (Gaumont) in Vanston Place and Putney Bridge cinema. During the post war period with many homes not owning tv sets and only relying on radio and newspapers for the headlines of the day, the Pathe Newsreel was a popular item, with its rousing musical opening and crowing white cockerel.
