I enjoyed visiting South Park as a child. My mother often took my sister, brother and I there. There was always so much to do and see. It had a good playground near Hugon Road. You could also hire games equipment from the store room below the bandstand.

I played on the tennis courts when I was older. You couldn't get on to them during Wimbledon fortnight though as aspiring Rod Lavers and Margaret Smiths missed more tennis balls than they actually hit.

Our family used to enjoy looking at the budgerigars in the aviaries and buying ice creams and drinks from the cafe. There was also a large greenhouse (palm house) you could go in to.

I must however admit to being a bit naughty when I was really young. There were fenced off out of bounds areas where my mate Ronny Stubbs (Stephendale) and I used to climb into and we were often shouted at and even chased by the keepers. What was also nice about South Park was that you could get in or leave by no less than four gates, which was useful if you had to make a quick escape !
