Aggie- Lollipop Queen Print E-mail

One of Sands End’s  most recognisable characters was Agnes 'Aggie' Wild who lived at 118 Broughton Road. She was, for nearly three decades, the 'lollipop' lady who worked the  zebra crossing on the corner of Clancarty Road and Wandsworth Bridge Road. She was known to several generations of Peterborough School children and was a familiar figure, striding purposely down Broughton Road in all weather, in her long white coat and black cap and carrying that large sign of hers.

Aggie (pictured above in this Fulham Chronicle photo) was awarded a British Empire medal in November 1981 which she received from Baroness Stewart - Lord Lieutenant of London and wife of the former Fulham MP Michael Stewart. The Fulham Chronicle reported the presentation ceremony, which took place at County Hall, Westminster. The citation was read by Assistant Commissioner of Police Mr W. H. Gibson.

"Mrs Wild is a school crossing patrol and has served at the same crossing at Wandsworth Bridge Road ever since she began this work in 1956."

"This crossing caters mainly for the children of Peterborough Infant and Primary Schools but also for two other local schools. The road is extremely busy but her unfailing dedication to her duties have earned her the respect of the children, the trust of their parents and the praise of the local police."

"Mrs Wild is a remarkably fit lady- she swims all year round and is a familiar local figure on her bicycle. No doubt all this activity has assisted her remarkable attendance record. Whatever the weather she is at her post caring for her school children."

"It is no wonder that she is a much loved lady and it is entirely appropriate that her long cheerful and dedicated service to her local community should have been recognised by the award of a British Empire Medal."

Aggie had a son called Kenny. She passed away during the 1990s.
